Conference rapport with summeries and insights from a conference held in May 2026 by working group 4 under the National Commitee for the Ocean Decade in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.

The conference focused on mitigating impacts on the marine environment from offshore wind and strengthening environmental considerations in future development of offshore wind. The workshops at the conference highlighted that the main challenges with respect to reconciling offshore energy expansion with nature protection are less about technology and more about governance, knowledge, and implementation.

Progress will require advances in relation to:

• Clear environmental goals and success criteria with focus on cumulative impact

• Better data, monitoring, and impact assessment

• Stronger coordination across authorities, sectors, and countries

• Ecosystem-based marine spatial planning in light of cumulative impacts

• Closer collaboration between science, policymakers, and industry

• Incentives and funding that support environmental performance and

standardised data sharing

• A pragmatic approach to managing uncertainty while continuing offshore wind

deployment
